It's unappreciated how much better tooling makes for better projects. 20 years ago we would have needed 15 people and a million bucks.

In 95 or 2005 we'd probably have a single box deploy simply to reduce complexity, and when I guessed wrong on scaling, would lose 6 weeks.

The system has stayed up for the last few days (sporadic-but-usable) thanks to a virtually instant Amazon Please Save My Bacon button.

And once we address the architecture issues that led to load being worse than modeled Amazon will just as quickly take melted servers back.
