After ~7 years of Rails experience I just learned that ~/.irbrc lets you read in Ruby code to control IRB sessions (i.e. console)
e.g. def logSQL!; #insert here the magic incantation which shows SQL queries in the console as they are run: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1344232/how-can-i-see-the-sql-that-will-be-generated-by-a-given-activerecord-query-in-ru … ; end
