In a text-based conversation with an Uber courier and he opened with a salarymanism so I salaryman'ed right back and then watched him, via the typing indicator, draft at least five attempts at the return salvo before landing a really well crafted one. "Game appreciates game."

My 17 year old son is suddenly interested in Learning Japanese. He loves Anime is just intellectually curious about the Japanese culture and language. Got him Rosetta Stone and he is learning a few words and how to write. Suggestions?

JSL as a textbook, drill the heck out of core conversations, I am ambivalent on texts to use for reading, watch more YouTube of native speakers who are close to your linguistic target than seems reasonable and repeat what they say in real time.

Linguistic target is a complicated subject but generally for contextual appropriateness in Japanese you want someone of same gender and age range in a similar set of situations to the ones you expect to encounter.
