In a text-based conversation with an Uber courier and he opened with a salarymanism so I salaryman'ed right back and then watched him, via the typing indicator, draft at least five attempts at the return salvo before landing a really well crafted one. "Game appreciates game."

Just read your blog post. Question: wouldn’t it be a huge advantage for hiring if you would introduce a more western culture? Like less hours more family time - better life.
-
There are startups that make that bet, but Schelling points are Schelling points for a reason, and it is not obvious that saying “We don’t employ salarymen!” is a more palatable message than “We employ salarymen.” to people who have been pointed in a salaryman direction since 3.

From your article: "UX and design which Silicon Valley companies would consider barely adequate for an internal admin app would strike Japanese customers like wizardry from the future." Is this still true 6 years later?
-
Mostly yes, with a few exceptions. Some mobile apps are extremely credible. Paypay jumps to mind. The best Japanese banking apps/sites look and feel like Bank of America around 2006 or so, though some of them have newer, shinier, on-trend design.

It feels like Salarymanism is similar to Goku going to King Kai's planet. You train communication under 100x gravity and come back to earth with superior skills. I would love to read about this

Your post seems very familiar to me. Many of the things you point out are also common in Brazil white collar culture

The hours worked parts is a bit different though, normally you are working 8-10h a day with weekends off but in extreme situations that is thrown out of the window for a 100h work week. These periods are often bursts, couple of months of 100h then a few months of normal 8h/week
