I think people overestimate the degree of salary differential between tech employees in the same nation but different offices/working remotely/etc. There are strong process/internal fairness/social reasons to not adjust as aggressively as a cost of living calculator suggests.

I've been doing this for almost 8 years. I know a lot of skilled engineers that could make a lot more money if remote work was more acceptable.

I know of a small but growing industry where this is happening big time right now and the people aren’t even being poached to do software, Google/Amazon/MS are moving into EE/science and paying tech salaries.
