Write for a reader who can click away at any second. A reader who is distracted. A reader who is stressed out about work. A reader who has a million things to read and still isn’t sure your article is worth their attention. Because it’s true. That’s your average reader.

Oh polite but strong disagree here: a stupendous portion of the value is in *not* writing for the "average reader."

That is absolutely true as well. Otherwise, I wouldn’t write essays like this. +1 to your comment.https://www.perell.com/blog/peter-thiel …

A lot of the optimizations that people make given the "average reader" view of the world counsel them to be more like BuzzFeed. And there's a place for that. It's called BuzzFeed. Meanwhile, some readers happily chew 10k words up before breakfast then go literally run the world.

Even when I'm trying to "market myself," the kind of people who don't have time to read a 2000-word post are often explicitly outside my target audience. In fact, losing certain kinds of readers can be a net gain. I believe sales people call this "qualifying."

I feel @nntaleb does the same with speaking. He's not your flawless eloquent speaker but he weeds out the non-serious listener with that style. Only the genuinely interested stay.

There was a point when I thought I ought to write listicles since it seems they do "best". Luckily, I didn't hang out around that low point in my life for very long.
