People do not widely assume in the software industry that they would be able to name every legal firm with $10M in revenue, but they assume that every software company with $10M in revenue is on the top of HN or TechCrunch at least weekly, and that just isn’t true.

The three things I think everyone in software should understand about this type of company: 1) Founding one is a lot easier than you probably model it as, and works out very well for founder. 2) Being an engineer at one is a package of subtle tradeoffs. 3) PE wants them *bad.*

As someone who has worked exclusively in this 'creamy middle' of software companies, I'd be interested to hear more of your thoughts on #2

Mind if I make some broad generalizations? Most software people should work for software companies (or other companies where software clearly drives the business and is seen as doing so). These are real software companies in a way that e.g. an insurance company is probably not.

But they are in competition with the AppAmaGooBookSoft and other software firms in the world, and I think one accepts some tradeoffs. Speaking generally: * far less comp * broadly better work/life balance (asterisk) * high likelihood tech not keeping pace with broader industry

Asterisk: I think that Big Software has a reputation for being a very grindy workplace and I think that people broadly do not appreciate the range of working styles which it successfully supports. I think this also rounds to true regarding funded startups over their lifecycle.
