I feel very happy as a user of technology when it acts as leverage for my ability to think and very unhappy when I am forced to do bookkeeping, conversions, etc which it would clearly be able to do better and which distract me from actual thought.

Partly this is a combination cultural problem at the bank and skill problem for the developer. Partly it’s “just” an underlying technology problem. The framework/language should have solved for this by now. Partly it’s a philosophy of computing problem. Goal is not “move data”!

“Cultural problem at the bank?” Speculating with a moderately high degree of confidence given previous experience: somebody made the inevitable pushback on the requirements document and someone else said “I dunno Compliance already signed off; let’s just make the user do it.”

I once had a website ask me my name in full width and then refuse it because it didn't like full width alphabet, katakana only. My jp bank account is registered at my real name and it's always a struggle to make websites accept that no, it isn't going to be kana

My internet company has been trying to use my credit card for 2 months now, they call me every week asking if they got my katakana name right and every time I tell them katakana isn't going to work.

I haven't been able to link my Line Pay account to my Rakuten bank for the last two years for this exact reason. Space separating last names? - Invalid. Remove the space? - Doesn't match what we have on file.

Since moving to Japan I met at least one web form that does not believe any kind of space belongs in a surname, but which then performs some actual validation of the ebtered surname against the one on the credit card. So I cannot give them money.
