As a solo founder, how do you answer the question “What happens if you get hit by a bus?”

“I look carefully both ways prior to crossing the street. *laughs* Business continuity plans available to enterprise clients beginning at $10k per year.”

Honestly surprised about the overall lack of concern from founders about this question. I would’ve lost a lot of customers without an answer for it. Probably the importance varies if the business generates bingo cards vs hosts critical network infrastructure though.

The last time I answered it, it was to the VP of IT at an American hospital whose name you would recognize, because they were proposing to use the HIPAA-compliant scheduling software I was selling adjacent to patient care.

Were they happy with you looking both ways before crossing the street or did they pay the $10k/year?

Directionally, sounded like: "So what's your bus number?" "1." "That's concerning." "Business continuity plan available starting at..." "That's not in budget but I definitely want it." "In that case recommend you implement backup strategy periodically; CSV export available."

Makes sense! I tell customers they can have automated backups to the service of their choosing + control of their devices with custom DNS, so they can migrate away any time. For some SaaS I think it does matter less and not as simple to handle as it happens to be for us though.

When my customers ask about security, business continuity, etc., they really mean "use some terms I don't understand to prove you've thought about this." The specifics of the answer don't matter, but saying something that we've obviously said dozens of times before does.
