The kid is smart. But it sounds to me like he’s taught her facts and she’s memorized them. This is exactly the kind of teaching that experts today say is old hat ....memorization and regurgitation of direct instruction without questioning.

I subscribe to the both/and approach, especially for younger kids. Knowing something is prereq to (eventually, if not initially) evaluating it critically.
