Most interesting premise to me is that the North (and 7 kingdoms generally) were structurally distinct, artificially held together by dragons, and now that this technology is gone, held only by an accident of memory, scant cultural threads slowly being pulled

This broad concept is also explored in the Dagger And Coin books by Daniel Abraham which have a lot of fun with banking and economics in a fantasy world previously held together by dragons. A different kind of story but super fun, among the most underrated series around.
