And this is apparently old news to at least someone, because when I looked it up on Amazon to get that stat on the price, clicking item page for some threw up a roadblock saying "This device is only sold to employees of medical organizations. Are you an employee... [Yes] [No]"

What a crazy year for science, right. People are doing end-runs around the traditional distribution processes for results in favor of getting them onto the Internet in the most credible possible fashion as quickly as possible.

One wonders, after things are back to normal, whether we'll say "*Phew* that was terrible. Alright, good news: we can all now again agree that it is only science if it has the right paperwork trail attached to it. All in favor please hold up your personal paperwork trail."

There are some very complicated tradeoffs here and I'll leave it to folks more professionally immersed in these issues to think through them thoroughly, but that discussion needs "If we like paperwork, and we like human lives, there is some margin at which we like one more."

yeah, I own multiple devices that could, at a hardware level, read these things - the samsung health app shipped with it natively - canada blocked all of them some years ago to be approved back into the market as 'safe' and 'accurate' so like... great, I guess
