Forgive me if this is a cold question; I genuinely want to understand the answer. Isn't a 90% death rate of coronavirus patients on ventilators somewhat in tension with the message that we have to do everything in our power to flatten the curve so we don't run out of ventilators?

So yes a) critical to minimize total number of people with bilateral pneumonia needing a ventilator incident to covid-19 and b) within that number, many more people see their families again if capacity not exceeded.

Well, clearly not many more, is my point. The people who survive and come off the ventilator are not well.

Also running-out-of-ventilators isn't the only reason for flattening the curve. It is also running-out-of medicine, general treatment, doctors, nurses, morticians and what not. Sorry for everyone I may have forgotten here.
