As an Indian, when people talk about Asia in general, I assume it's not about us.

It’s fascinating. In America I’ve had my east Asian friends say something about Asians and then say they meant to exclude Indians in that comment.

As an “Asian”, I agree. The few times I can recall in which “Asians” self-identify that way tends to be rather cynical, self-serving ploys: 1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_values … 2. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_East_Asia_Co-Prosperity_Sphere …https://twitter.com/Convexity16/status/1200951928332550145 …

I think when many Western people say "Asia" they are only thinking about East Asia (specifically JP, KR, CN). If I was trying to be more specific, but still general, I'd break Asian regions/cultures into: 1. East Asia 2. SE Asia 3. India 4. Middle East

You forgot Russia.

Why? My guess = if 'many people' corresponds to 'western mainstream edu', esp in history/lit, Asian nuances must not be given much attention, leading to this gap in knowledge. Another guess is summation of geographic mental models we have in our heads due to map representations
