Nice touch on checkout from UberEats in Japan, which has no culture of tipping for restaurant service. Quoting approximately: [ ] + 100 yen: "I love this restaurant." Support this restaurant. (?) The (?) was "100 yen of support will be gifted to the restaurant on your behalf."

If tipping isn't clearly a positive equilibrium, why would smoothing its adoption be pro-social? Genuine question.

This isn't tipping: it's truly discretionary, it goes to the restaurant and not an employee (and all parties understand this), it's presumably relatively time-bounded, and it doesn't replace core compensation the way tipping (in US practice) does.

Similar feature has been introduced in Australia, and I have gone through the same thought process when using it. Tipping is not a societal norm, but supporting a local restaurant is a shallower on-ramp.
