I can't over-emphasize this enough for folks at the earliest stage of building your SaaS. Put the application on a subdomain like app.your-product[dot]com and have your main .com be an easy to use CMS marketing site like Wordpress or Webflow. So annoying to unwind after the fact.

Hopefully the headless CMSes will come along fast enough such that you can get best of both worlds with a day or two on putting a render-the-content thing together in your stack of choice.

After scratchwriting a CMS for my first software business I told clients "Every software company should have their own CMS; it's just too useful not to do, and once you have it you can bolt everything in." 80% of the effort wasted... but that last 20% could be half the business.

So much this! A Webflow or standard Wordpress CMS is just fine... until you want to spin up 200+ similar-but-not-identical landing pages with dynamic content based on how your product integrates with a combination of other tools.

True. But it’s very easy to transition from my suggestion to this. Nightmare to go the other way when you now have to hire a content marketer who can also deploy to heroku (or have to copy paste their work yourself to complete every job)

Same. I’ve gone back and forth on this. Currently Bidsketch is on WP but now Docsketch site is custom and we’ve been able to quickly write code (free tool, templates, etc) that helped grow traffic 200k+ in a year. For us, the trade off of slower content updates has been worth it.

It’s only as awkward as anyone’s lack of experience with that tool. If you know the platform, obviously way easier than if you don’t.

We're going through this now and

just built best of both worlds with middleman + netlify + contentful and I agree. working in base HTML/JS makes marketing code easy, and our C-levels can post their pieces of content with one click

Same here. For example, no way you could do what Zapier does for SEO (auto-generated pages for pairs of apps) on WordPress, but rolling your own CMS is a pain as well

The unfortunate alternative to non-technical people pushing content is for devs to do it. IMO, devs doing content management is never an ideal use of their time, nor the customer's money.
