What's the reason companies release games exclusive to a single platform? Take Animal Crossing New Horizons...exclusive to the Switch. The obvious answer is that it helps Nintendo sell more hardware by keeping their games exclusive. But do the economics *actually* play out?

It's a tougher question when you're not a first party developer, and the play there is usually "You're going to sacrifice some reach if you go exclusive. In return, we're going to improve on the standard economics of this deal for you." (Sometimes time-bounded, too.)

"Improve the economics?" Discount on your royalty rates, marketing commitments, straight-up "Ship a game by an internally significant date that meets our standards and we'll pay you $X0 million.", etc.

Anecdotally, I purchased a Switch just to play Breath of the Wild. Have yet to buy another Switch game, but the package price of ~$360 for BotW was still worth it for what's probably the greatest modern video game
