What's the reason companies release games exclusive to a single platform? Take Animal Crossing New Horizons...exclusive to the Switch. The obvious answer is that it helps Nintendo sell more hardware by keeping their games exclusive. But do the economics *actually* play out?

This is in some ways a commitment strategy, and it's one of the reasons they were so late and underdeveloped on mobile phone gaming. Mario/Link/et al *do not* get given to anyone else's platform.

It's a tougher question when you're not a first party developer, and the play there is usually "You're going to sacrifice some reach if you go exclusive. In return, we're going to improve on the standard economics of this deal for you." (Sometimes time-bounded, too.)

Sony example: I am seriously thinking of buying a PS4 for FFVII Remake.

This makes sense. I bought the Switch for Mario, Zelda, et al., but I later started buying non-Nintendo IPs too. I've bought games I already own on other platforms for Switch just because it's nice to have them on there.
