The most optimistic anecdote from Tokyo in a while: I went to the grocery store yesterday. This same store was business as usual ~2 weeks ago. Yesterday:

      * Every cashier in a mask and latex gloves. * Plastic barriers between cashier stations and checkout lines. * Signs on floor marking out ~2 meters of personal space. * Hygiene officer disinfecting baskets/etc literally constantly, morning to night. * 90%+ masks on shoppers.

To the extent the coronavirus response relies on institutions and authority, oh boy. To the extent it is a distributed challenge of bringing one's A game to diligence and logistics, this grocery store has a whole lot of diligence and logistics expertise and more on backorder.

I will note, not for the first time, that this is not entirely distinct from the annoying & hairsplitting discourse regarding whether formal authorities have said particular magic words, because the grocery store didn't institutionally achieve conviction prior to the magic words.

Interestingly a lot of these measures are viral (in a good way). There isn't a central czar of grocery store layouts distributing plans for plastic barriers. Someone either went to another store or saw a photo and said "Oh, that's clever", then field expedience'd up 30 of them.

As you’re aware, Japan is one of the only countries where no czar is needed due to the culture and homogeneity of the population. Where asking door people to follow the non-rule rules is enough to get a majority of the nation to comply 80% of the way.

I heard culture and homogeneity means 80% compliance for free an awful lot during February and March. Is your belief in the truth of that statement *higher* as a result of evidence currently available?

Data point - as an extrovert I go grocery shopping every day (need my high!). Wholefoods in Santa Cruz has been doing the steps you mentioned for at least 2 weeks. Interestingly, today was the first time I saw *zero* shoppers without a mask. A week ago? 20% max.

The local 711 has a large sheet of plexiglass hanging from the ceiling, and it’s the simplest form—and appears just as effective as more complicated solutions—I’ve seen so far

This is something that's been really cool to me. It turns out average people are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, in their fields and industries. They're inventing ways to keep going while preserving public health, and doing it well.

222nm UV light body scanners walking into supermarkets and big box stores would do a lot. Kills everything on you and the cart, and safe on skin.

The first place I saw those plastic barriers in Seattle was at my local 7-11, the guy who runs that was absolutely not screwing around. In the next week and a half it so, they were everywhere, but I'll never forget when I walked in and saw it.
