B&W is compelling because by removing color detail it draws attention to figure, curves, facial expressions, emotions, movement, time of day, depending on subject In one picture, it's bright. I'm going to second this, and also add that black and white is about *light* whereas color is about color contrast. As seen below. /Navy ships in particular. Grey is a dull blue, so it's blue on blue. But put it in B&W...pic.twitter.com/Q8XiR4I7PA
That is not a great shot (I suspect the great shot is only available in June at sunset when it's 110F, and I will never do that). but boom, the darkest thing becomes the immediate focus of your eyeball instead of the green plant.
Very much this. Most people don't take black and white photos, so the quality remains high If average people start doing black and white then Goodhart's law will take effect and we'll see quality drop
