It’s interesting that YouTube is relatively good for recipes and Google is bad more or less because of the economics of content creation and discovery algorithms more than videos being a better way to teach cooking than text.

Can you say more about this? I’ve been so frequently disappointed by Google results that I now default to going to Serious Eats or adding the name of a trusted chef... haven’t thought through why the economics for textual recipes are strained though

So sad when the way of distribution (or more of discovery - SEO) is the determining factor of how content is created, rather than an inherent quality measure or up to the individual way of expression. Reminds me of 3-5 minutes pop songs vs longer forms of music.

I am not sure if it is that bad. I listen to a lot of short songs and some longer songs. However: "What drives what is heard on the radio is an artist's desire to have their music hit the mainstream, and a record label's desire to profit from that"https://www.vox.com/2014/8/18/6003271/why-are-songs-3-minutes-long …

I would wholeheartedly agree if the subject is recipe search. But imho teaching cooking to friends and family, watching a video (when you are a complete beginner) is a 10x conduit to getting a better result.

Nothing worse than scrolling through a thousand word blog post looking for the list of ingredients.

Youtube is better than Google for recipes because of it's video suggestion algorithm, not because video is a better way to teach cooking than text.

Maybe I cook differently, but recipe search is literally the only genre of search that I think Google does a decent job at. All other search on Google is just a litany of bad and irrelevant ads. I cook a LOT though, so I'd never watch a video to see how to cook something.

It works fine, except it will prioritize recipes preceded by useless, multi-page essays over those just giving me the specific information I need. It's not uncommon for the first 90% to be obnoxious fluff for seo purposes.
