Not only do many Japanese companies require employees to use personal seals to process routine company business, but in most cases employees are forbidden from removing their seal from the company premises.https://twitter.com/gambsgambs/status/1248201326997180417 …

@patio11 new-to-me piece of Japanese corporate culture here, did you ever work somewhere that gave you a stamp like this?

Every company I’ve worked in in Japan has had a variety of stamps. The degree to which they’re central to operations varies. Here are Starfighter’s (can’t show the side with printing because it’s a security token). One for bank, one for contracts/etc, one for no legal effect.pic.twitter.com/1hO3laoF2Y

Is it a "security token" in the same way your account number on the check is a security token? I.e. you don't want people to have it, but also, it can't be secret because if you write a check the person you gave the check to has the info.

This is the reason the one for the bank is globally unique and shared between only you and the bank, and while there are some non-stamp subtleties here, suffice it to say that a savvy adversary with that stamp would be much more annoying than one without it.

Are there standardised or traditionally accepted sizes/shapes for different purposes?

The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from. My bank has standards, the ward office has standards, the Ministry of Justice (keeps corporate records among many other things) has standards, etc.

A fun wrinkle for personal stamps: while the overwhelmingly most common choice for Japanese people is "your last name, in kanji" in principle it can be a lot of things such as e.g. a family crest, a signature, etc. Some places say "But actually no, we will accept ONLY..."

Sometimes the list of "ONLY x, y, or z because darn it this is official" has, ahem, failed to include at least one thing which I both possess and which would fit within the physical dimensions of the stamp.
