Among the best best engineering documents I’ve read, written in a tone of gibbering madness, was a Google one about how Calendar handled time zones. It has since been taken down by the Borg and replaced with a soothing lie.https://twitter.com/SwiftOnSecurity/status/635644114277535744 …

that was one of my favorite things to mention to people about from working on a calendar. most timezone-related problems have a (sometimes hard) answer, but this is one that literally doesn’t have one: someone’s going to be impacted.

Even, "There is a recurring meeting taking place in multiple time zones and DST changes happen at different times (e.g London and NYC)." has no particularly good default behavior.

Fun fact: I once missed a friend's out of state wedding ceremony because, when I put it on my Google calendar, I was in a different time zone 🙃

Yesterday I learned that not only are Daylight Saving Time not synchronized between Europe and US. But also that Australia is out of sync with both. I’ll stop right there and not look at the other 166 countries.

And not all of the country observes DST. And some states are hours + 30 minutes off GMT. Even better than Indiana used to be.

An event like all hands can be organized twice according to the different time zones. Other crucial meetings always have a sacrificing person(s).

Frequent product/dev mistake I’ve seen: not take time & time zones seriously. Just - basics! - using iso 8601 (yyyy-mm-dd) made some developers minds go 🤯 - ie they didn’t care and still don’t

To me they’re like basic hygiene: you keep your time and dates clean, it costs almost nothing, and saves you bunch of problems down the line. And that’s not even considering the actually hard problems like the ones in this thread.
