We are so, so, so very fortunate this didn't happen in e.g. 1998, when we had sufficiently widely distributed networks to spread the virus but would have been effectively powerless to mount a coordinated, distributed response on the timeframes available to us.

In 1998, translated versions of American newspapers would just now be hitting mid-level Japanese decisionmakers suggesting that perhaps the US was in a bit of a pickle and that someone should perhaps ring some hospitals and ask whether there had been bilateral pneumonia reported.
