Americans are in a weird moment when everyone recognizes that the CDC and WHO will change their position on universal mask use, but we're supposed to wait for the official starting gun to adopt this potentially lifesaving measure, and hold to the old, bad advice while we wait.

The thing which extremely frustrates me here is that "everyone" is, in practice, "Everyone who has spent several hours researching this topic and has sufficient inclination and ability to weight probative value of claims against each other."

It's like saying "We're going to start handing out math tests this week to everyone. If you get it wrong, sometimes we kill you, sometimes we kill somebody in your city. We'll stop distributing the math tests next week. Also: please say nothing about the math tests."

A close corollary of this is that television is cheap but pet geeks are very expensive so guess who gets to benefit from having pet geeks? (You can interpret geek as "consulting epidemiologist" if you desire. That is certainly a thing available at some price point.)
