“Why did your father read the WSJ?” He was a small businessman in real estate and partly wanted to be informed about e.g. which banks were expanding branch networks. Also it was sort of a talisman. (I used it as same for years.)

Literally none, which weirds me out. You can get the usuals suspects in Japan but after doing it for years found that I enjoyed the work product a lot less than reading casually online.

That anecdote suddenly reminds me of how I started reading the newspaper: in 2nd or 3rd grade, I always read the daily comics in part 2, and I noticed the editorial cartoons in part 1; I didn't understand them, so I began reading the news to understand what the joke was...
