When someone evaluates a donation by what % of the donor's wealth it is, they're conveying that what they care most about is not how much *good* it does for others, but how much *pain* it caused the giver. That's their standard of morality.https://twitter.com/peterpham/status/1243658310345097216 …

I don't understand why people have to dunk & complain. $25M is a tremendous amount of money. Let's be thankful for the donation. Some people donate time, some money, and some do nothing but troll & think that's helpful. It's not. pic.twitter.com/wdUqo3VDii

It’s the parable of the widow’s mite, but weaponized, and stripped of the message that the widow’s sacrifice elevates the widow but does not diminish the wealthy engaged in acts of charity.

It does seem to diminish the other contributors? "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesson_of_the_widow%27s_mite …

In the fashion this is taught in Catholic school the message emphasized is that suffering to help another is virtuous not that helping another while not suffering is worthy of condemnation.

I think this is mostly true but is somewhat contradicted by the statement in Luke “wo unto the rich for they have had their reward” which implies that those who do not give until they are no longer rich are under condemnation

Jesus spends a lot of time criticizing people for holding on to their wealth; in that context I’ve always assumed that this story was a critique of the rich as much as a celebration of the widow (This reflects how I learned it in Catholic school)

Yeah that's because the plain meaning of what Jesus said, which is that rich people shouldn't exist and to choose to continue to be rich means you're going to Hell, is untenable for an institutionalized religion

I've read it exclusively as a condemnation. It is a failure of the rich to give sufficient help and that gap has to be covered by the poor.

True! I forgot how different catholic teaching is from the actual/old texts, I remember being told mostly "nice people stories", but texts are a lot more crude.

@patio11, what from the text would support that viewpoint that there was no condemnation for the wealthy? To me the whole of the New Testament is demonstrating Christ’s sacrifice for others. The wealthy man’s gift represents no sacrifice. That seemed to be the point.

To me, taking the teachings of Christ, and removing any need for self-sacrifice is the weaponization of Christ's teachings. It seems to miss the entire point of the widow's mite parable. Christ-like love is to personally sacrifice to help others. That was his whole life's message

Shocking that elite bishops and ecclesiastical scholars would want to portray the rich and powerful in a better light.

Allowing others to suffer while you can prevent it is a moral failing. The greater the gap, the greater the failing.
