After seeing the thread from the Slack CEO I think I'm going to start a diary. So much is happening, so quickly, and it's overwhelming my working memory, but we're living history in real time and anything not committed to paper or electronic media (and much that is) will be lost.

My day job (also: night job) is CEO of Slack, a publicly traded company with investors to whom I am a fiduciary, 110k+ paying customers of all sizes, and thousands of employees I care about very, very much. The last few weeks have been 🤯😳😢 Here’s what it's been like. [Thread]

I don't think it's widely appreciated yet, but: Twitter has been far more successfully at getting engagement from me than parts of my brain thought was wise for ~10 years now. I have seen more & better use in last few days than ever before, and regret every earlier regret.

Speaking of diaries: if you're not in a mental headspace to write right now, and I have been in and out of that headspace, pull out your iPhone, turn on the video camera, and say "Dear diary: here's what happened today." for ~5 minutes. Focus on what you saw/etc.

It's therapeutic, and a hundred years from now, some elementary school student asked the difference between a primary and a secondary source will say "A primary source is a document recorded in real time, like that one from 2020 we read about. The textbook is a secondary source."

I’ve kept a daily journal since 2002 and definitely recommend it. In addition to being therapeutic, it’s great for answering questions like “Now when did so-and-so and I first meet?” and “What was I doing in July of 2007 again?”

By the way, in July of 2007 I was in London on a wacky “physics consulting gig” to evaluate an invention that had no chance of working. I visited a college friend while I was in town, then got a random business-class upgrade for the flight back to Los Angeles. Best. Flight. Ever.

I started one about a month ago. Historically speaking, it’s already startling to read entries from late February and compare that to the present. And it’s a nice outlet, too.
