I keep getting asked about Japan and coronavirus, which: * is a reflection that despite the Internet there is a lot of social distance between Japan and the rest of the world * is difficult for me to comment on publicly * is not something I’m an expert in

I’m sorry to hear that. I had sincerely hoped things were going better than that in Japan. Part of the problem with this virus is that people *really* don’t want to talk about the hard truths, which been the case in country after country. Italy shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

Yeah, I've heard little about their response, and the curve indicates that we should be hearing a lot more, because it shows them doing better than most. The few places chalked it up to “well, because Japan, I guess.” Yet they have one of the biggest incentives to fudge.

According to my counterparts in Yokohama & Tokyo. They have yet to shutdown commerce and businesses. The measures they took back in February have seemed to work so far. They said it’s a problem they will deal with, but they don’t plan on shutting down commerce.

Not a question for you, but a hypothetical: is the average Japanese citizen socially or legally hindered by speaking against the government response? Is the average Japanese immigrant?

I lived in Tokyo during Touhoku quake and Fukushima accident and was amazed at their response. Why do you write that now? Are they not handling the situation well? (I no longer live there)

That doesn't sound good. From the numbers and trend lines I was under the impression that Japan was doing relatively well - perhaps relatively well still isn't absolutely well though.

If I understand correctly, seems counter to this. I have no basis to comment on the validity.https://twitter.com/shanej614/status/1240793224517545984?s=21 …

I would imagine "all the schools are closed" feels very different to different groups of people.
