might be more of a personal gamble than anything else, but buying gift cards right now would provide them with some up-front cash

i recommend reaching out directly to them and asking if there's a way for them to make it happen. if they spin it up fast enough, could save them

agree, here—places will have to innovate. also can't take credit for the idea, my dad is a labor economist and pitched it to me last night

Automatic coupon app - give your local restaurant/bar/coffeeshop $X now and can redeem for $Y in 3 months Starbucks had something like $1.5 billion in floated gift card value a few years ago, damn near a bank...

opportunity here if nobody has a frictionless experience. alternatively, poking @stripe or @Square engineers you know to see if they can whip something up would be good

actually- @patio11 if you were to tell a local business the most frictionless way they could get advances from their regular customers to remain afloat during coronavirus lockdowns, what would it be?

I would probably go 100% low-tech and sell coupon books by the register. 10 massages for the price of 9; money up front. If you already have a web presence and ordering capability, sell same delivered via USPS. There are some complexities here but none are as bad as shutting.

Complexities include: accounting treatment, escheatment in even of breakage, and the fact that consumer law and e.g. credit card processors know that you’re transferring risk of business failure here from you to customers, which they are not neutral about.

But from my personal perspective the community benefits from the continued existence of Charming Little Coffee Shop and people/businesses with healthy balance sheets should be willing to step into the breach right now to shore up those who don’t have them.
