“Wait I am buying content from you? Why am I paying 10,000X what Netflix costs?” “Well because we don’t really do scaled instruction. We do individual instruction.” “You do?” “Well that’s complicated and it rounds to aspirational. But my costs are real.”

“So I’m hearing your content costs more because you are... bad at operating a content business. You have an expensive physical plant and expensive part-time non-specialist content producers.” “I am not in the content business but yeah would be abysmally bad at operating one.”

Aren’t faculty salaries only a tiny part of university budgets

My understanding is that a significant part of education cost growth over the years has been the dramatic expansion of administrative staff

What happens to the costs when you remove everything except the actual teaching? No joke, a distributed university with a mix of online lessons and realspace tutorials of 5-10 people could be a lot cheaper and deliver the same or better quality than most universities.

Three job categories - lecturers (create the lessons), teaching aides (mark, help with the work set?), and tutors (meet with students in person). The first two can be done remotely, and the latter would be part time and probably use their own houses. No real estate needed.

FWIW, assuming you were trying to redact the second Twitter handle, it's still pretty easy to read...

Yep. Two people can be 100% right in their subjective scenarios, with the appropriate outcomes being completely opposite of one another. It’s a mad mad world.

Stir in the complexities added by FAFSA etc, at least for some.

Great faculty are likely to benefit from the shift but not sure about the higher ed business model if it doesn’t change. https://twitter.com/akifmalik/status/1237198423654162432?s=21 …https://twitter.com/akifmalik/status/1237198423654162432 …

As Stanford and other universities shift full speed into remote / online education over #coronavirus, will be interesting to see if 2020 is a tipping point where higher ed shifts much more learning online going forward. Yes, the irony...a virus forces more use of computers 😯
