Outside of FAANG, how many companies would you guess have that level of comp. I'd guess > 90% of these employees work for < 10 companies, but am not familiar with comp at HFT firms or similar.

There are a lot of companies who want to employ people that AppAmaGooBookSoft want to employ. They all need a strategy for convincing those people to work with them. "Give up if the candidate cares about compensation." is one strategy, but it is not the only one.
