You don't even need an audience to get huge career benefits out of having ~3 essays on a personal web presence. You can use them as a proof-of-work in cold or coldish 1:1 reachouts like e.g. to hiring managers for jobs you want. It puts you *so far ahead* of the average reachout.https://twitter.com/david_perell/status/1235052245445742593 …

People under-estimate two things: 1. The emotional challenges you face when you start writing online. 2. The benefits of writing online, even when you have a niche audience and 3-5 well-written essays on your personal website. Finding the courage to publish is the hardest part

"On what?" Whatever it is that you do professionally. This does not have to be rocket science; "Architecting a real-time chat application with NSQ and websockets" would be a great piece for a full-stack engineer, for example. Or "The Cash App Onboarding UX, dissected."

(Note how for a lot of jobs "I'm going to describe a very commonly used applicaiton/service/etc and you're going to walk through how you understand it with me" is a very literal interview question, so why not get ahead of the curve. Bonus: you'll be prepped as heck for that one.)

A couple of questions from a new-ish online writer. OP notes "well-written" which is seems contextual to your audience. How would you define well-written and do you aim to stay "on brand" when writing?

You would be astounded how low the bar is. Basically, don’t have your written output cause reader to downgrade estimate of your professional ability or depth of thought. Most people don’t have to worry about being on-brand since they functionally have no brand.

I want to work with people that are self-motivated, aim to have a big overview of their field, and want to communicate their insights and ideas. In hiring decisions I’ve therefore seen it as a big plus if the candidate is writing a blog.

Thank you for opening my eyes on this. I am completely sold. If someone had to start, would you suggest something technical or non technical?

This is so true. I wrote an article on my consulting website about Manufacturing ERP Implementation. 0 organic traffic....but absolutely deadly lead-in to consulting work.
