It's reflective to how well we deal with disasters (self-inflicted or not). Those who avert/minimize them are ridiculed as alarmists, those who "manage the escalation" are showered with praise. Which one do you think motivates politicians more?

I've not managed to dig up the source within a minute or two, but apparently UK civil service's pandemic research & planning determined that unlike a variety of other drastic measures, closing schools has an outsize effect on slowing spread and is worth it.

I've never understood too little too late - especially in this case. If you even slow the spread of the pandemic, you effectively increase the ability of the health system to deal with it. Even if the same people end up getting it. It's not binary.

I see it as an admission that school isn't that important anyway. It's just a place to put kids in so they can stay safe while adults go to work. If they are no longer safe there, obviously they should stay home.
