What I really want for Google Docs isn't "Here are some suggested edits" or "Have you considered the git + patches model, but for English?", but rather "Here's an alternative vision of this part of the piece; let's talk about it and align on a path forward."

Stepping back to a broader point: Just like we don't naturally have a great frame of reference for how much good software can do, I think we don't appreciate how many thousands of years of human life are frittered away due to software which incentivizes doing the wrong thing.

For sure. Whenever somebody sends me writing for feedback, I ask exactly what kind of feedback they want. Toward the end, light copyedits are what people want, and that UI is fine. But earlier, what they want is broad reactions. Then, small nitpicks are mainly irritating.

@patio11 that's def how I use it, highlight an entire paragraph and rewrite with thesis statement first. Wonder if this can be automated? Or do you imagine a whole UX to nudge editors towards this sort of behavior? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
