It just occurred to me how different the narrative around Twitter was in 2009 (citizen journalism, the Arab Spring) compared to 2016 (fake news, echo chambers, the attention economy, etc).

Twitter went from something which relative organizational underdogs could use to build personal followings and leverage them for career wins to a constant tournament you have to participate in where victory is you live another day and defeat is you never work in your field again.

(I don’t think that is descriptively accurate, but I think that if I were e.g. a young reporter at the New York Times or aspiring young fiction writer, I would rate that as descriptively accurate.)
