(In hindsight I may have translated this in such a way as to not give the impression that the waitress was being empathetic and distressed on the kids’ behalf while speaking in her third language. Mea maxima culpa; that sort of nuance is a challenge.)

This is true for Maharastrian food as well. We use crushed peanuts in all the curries. By the way, what's the name if the this Thai dessert? It sounds delicious. One of the South Indian dessert is prepared with banana, coconut and jaggery. Sounds similar.
