I wonder if they'll let me get Boring And Reliably High Signal as my job title.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1230545613747412992 …

Visa I thoroughly enjoy. Patio has been a funny trajectory (for me): 1. Way back HN-when: "He's brilliant!" 2. Later on: "Okay, he's boring." 3. Recent year or so: "Boring and reliably high signal is some sort of neglected sweet spot let me check out his websites reading list."

"What is your job title?" Formally? No one knows. "You must be joking." If I print out a confirm-you-work-here letter it says "New Markets", but that means basically nothing. "Is that even OK?" If I continue being Boring And Reliably High Signal life will probably work out.

Job titles are funny in that my impression is you care about them basically not at all early in your career, care about them quite a lot at the middle stages of your career for signaling reasons, and then eventually graduate to not caring that much about them again.

"Where are you in that spectrum?" I have been in ~1 interaction in the last twelve months where the difference between formal legible authority and informal illegible suasion was perhaps material, but I expect basically nothing on my LinkedIn matters vis my next adventure.

I was happy to be just a "developer" for a long time and do everything - mentoring, leadership, architecture. At the point where I wanted to lead an engineering org, though, "developer" didn't communicate what I had been doing to others. It made the next step harder.

Totally - I started off as “Grand overlord of the Desktop” at Netscape, was really pleased with my “Director, Network operations” at my Sight Machine, and today I’m really happy with just “Data Engineer.”-most important thing is to have fun job with good people. And oh, $. :-)
