And every time that has happened, it retroactively removes ~all the benefit of encryption for emails encrypted against their private/public key pair for the last several years, because they should not trust me or Gmail to keep that private key safe.

My gpg key is on my yubikey. I'm not sure I could send it to you even if I wanted to. Also, I use
@KeybaseIO for secure communication because nobody can figure out gpg

That's a ui problem. Users should interact with business cards as a metaphor for public keys and keys for private keys. Tragic Commons = abysmal crypto apps. I'm glad Signal & Keybase exist but they focus on many of the wrong things in my opinion.

It's the Achilles heel of gpg, AND crypto. I've been really excited for both for periods of time, but I have to admit that empirically, neither are compatible with actual human beings.
