(It is changing at least in part because if you raise a Series B then a $50 million sale is probably a failure case but if you got there on a $1 million seed round then all stakeholders plausibly say “Umm well that certainly achieved most of my objectives for last 5 years.”)

when do these PE firms start running incubators and just turn into conglomerates? has this already happened?

To the limit of my ability to discern, there isn’t much use of e.g. the studio model in SaaS yet. I think we’ll likely see it, but the thing we’re already seeing is a semi-persistent pipeline between operators, fundingn sources, and PE.
