I gather their email contained a solid illustration of the $ value that they brought into the company via their work? That would be about the only thing I could think of that would justify that much of an increase in one hit.

This is a surprising answer. Of all companies, I would have assumed Stripe wouldn't operate under the scarcity bias without something like actual value (as described above) laid out in the conversation.
