It occurs to me that my father is basically this but for the South Side of Chicago, effortlessly recalling extended kin networks and whose cousin went to high school with what city bigwig 40 years ago.

I saw this phenomenon last week. Someone asked me how I remain in contact with so many people and remember their names, faces, and what we spoke about the last time we saw one another. I didn't understand the question. Part of being very online is being very aware all the time.

In my view, this level of ambient knowledge is what good recruiters should have, and is the bit that won't be automated (oh you worked at XX in '15? you probably went through YY event & know about ZZ).

It's also very interesting how many successful people seem to spend years learning as much as possible about the field they later go on to dominate (Michael Ovitz reading the entire company archives early in his career comes to mind).
