Yeah, they basically had to be doing theatrical trickery. If they’d dosed a kid with enough radioactive iodine to make the Geiger counter hit on the thyroid that fast, the kid would have shown serious issues later. So this also acted to calm kids about radiation hazards, falsely.

Back then they also used to stick radium rods up kids noses to shrink their adenoids, which they thought would prevent breathing problems. They really were a lot more blase' about it.

i'm torn because, on the one hand, i think they would think this is safe enough to do. on the other hand, i don't think the demonstration would be reliable enough and theatrics would be much quicker and easier.
