HN asks: how to address a 12 month gap in employment prior to current job search? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22225372 … My answer, regardless of cause: “I took some time off to explore projects and am excited to get back to work.” then *move on*.

This is one of those hiring questions to which there are no right answers but many wrong answers; your answer will be scored as either neutral or disqualifying. Another question with similar dynamics: “Why did you leave your last job?”

Not sure if you have ever been fired but what is your take on that one? "I was fired" isn't the best answer...

If it wasn't for cause (stealing, insubordination, etc), answer a different question or give them a reason to hear what they want: "I'm looking for a place where I can contribute X, Y and Z." "No longer a growth opportunity for me."

I’d steal @tqbf verbatim here: “I felt like I had contributed what I could contribute and am looking for new challenges.” and then *move on.*

Sometimes I feel like I am getting credit for things that are way too basic to get credit for.

FWIW, I had a very simple view of the world when I was e.g. 22, was raised that honesty was the best policy, and would not have had a good mental model on there being times to not give verbose, directly responsive answers to any question asked me.

Some people are wired differently, and there is almost literally no piece of advice about The Rules which is too explicit / too basic / etc in such a way that it creates no value for no person.

Yeah, I get that the perspective is helpful! It’s just weird to see it attributed to me. :)
