This is one of those hiring questions to which there are no right answers but many wrong answers; your answer will be scored as either neutral or disqualifying. Another question with similar dynamics: “Why did you leave your last job?”

It is entirely reasonable to leave a job because it missed payroll, because you had an irreconcilable difference with a boss, because the office had poisonous politics, because you were bored, or because you were denied promotion. If you say that out loud, 2 data points on you.

This question scares me the most, re my big gap in professional work, because I don’t have it in me to lie. Saying anything other than, I was too sick to work so I took a break and now I’m healthy again and excited to work would make me feel guilty and they’d be able to tell

Though I’m realizing it’s technically not lying to not put a gap on my resume and say I spent that time trying to make a sole proprietorship consulting company work and it wasn’t working so I went back to school I guess to me having Lyme disease feels less shameful than failing

I love hearing the answer "I explored working on my own projects but found I enjoy working with a team more". Shows self drive, willingness to experiment, but most importantly, the self awareness to know when they are wrong

Could you elaborate on "regardless of cause"? I took a leave for family reasons and because I was tired. I thought it was a good opportunity to fix both. Should one rather not mention reasons like those?
