e.g. When I am attempting to buy a house, the broker staying on top of me to get all the documents submitted in a timely fashion isn’t an imposition. They’re paid (quite a bit!) to make that happen.

Isn't that what most of middle management (especially in financial institutions) is there to do? Have you done it yet? Have you done it yet? Have you done it yet? .... Etc etc

I feel like that probably extremely misallocates middle management’s time if that is true of a firm you know of. Aspirationslly, they should probably be ensuring that teams are working on the right projects, are properly resources, and that things blocking them are dealt with.

This was a relatively minor idea in Greg Egan's Permutation City, but it stuck with me. The idea of an external executive function, that you program up-front and then it runs your life for a while.

My Office 365 account has this My Analytics service that is doing maybe the first 1% of this - it watches my email and notices when I commit to doing something and I’m asked to do something, and then surfaces these back gently.
