      There are a few ways to read that question. One of them is some sort of moral worth compared vis other professions, and nobody who believes salaries should track moral worth will be mollified by any answer. One is "Are they worth that much to businesses?", which is simpler: Yes.

          At the big US tech companies, engineers who’ve been with the company for ~10 years will almost all be in this ballpark, +/-20%.
