There is increasing bifurcation in career paths and the returns to them in the engineering community, and increasingly it appears to be severe enough that not only do the sides having difficulty empathizing with each other, they affirmatively believe the other side doesn't exist.

That’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you’re an excellent engineer, would you work away from HQ at a company where the culture presumes you’re subpar? No, you’d move to HQ or seek out a company with a less broken culture.

Companies with remote-friendly cultures have the competitive advantage of getting all the best employees who aren’t willing to move to SF/SV/Seattle. At those companies, remote engineers are every bit as good, and as productive, as those at HQ.
