I was once very, very surprised that I took a bucket of coins to a bank branch and was told "Oh we can't actually take a deposit of those coins. We will assist you in sealing them in a bag then sending them to our central facility, where we actually count coins."

Absolutely! Which is why banks should be terrified of Plaid et al. If you take away the reason(s) for customers to physically visit branches, you lose all that juicy upsell. Visa just bought themselves an amazing distribution channel.
