I've been in the self-published ebook business for 16 days now, and just crossed $40K in sales.
I can't pretend I'm an expert in this profession, but here's everything I did so far.

And depending on the book and the level of authorial sophistication with regards to operating a business the residual value could be 10% of the launch window (common-ish) or it could be multiple times the launch window (extremely uncommon; relies on building marketing system).
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm expecting a bit more than 10% residual value. I think it seems very plausible that I get an average of 2 sales per day for a year, just from search traffic and word of mouth. That alone would be another 70% residual. But just speculating. We'll see.
Though numbers tend to creep up over time as networks get larger, as the technology of doing this gets more widely distributed, and as buying public increasingly learns "Oh wait $50 for an e-book is *totally* worth it / 'Just expense it goodness don't waste our time talking.'"
Interesting, how would you compare Daniel's audience-building outcomes to that typical "meat and potatoes" author? Assumed $20-40k launches required lots of success in that area, along with picking a popular enough subject etc.
